Wikimania research help!

I just need to know, can I send emails on behalf of Wikimania2014, or will I need to draft such emails and ask for you or someone from the organising committee to send them.--KTo288 (talk) 13:23, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure, go ahead. What are you trying to do? EdSaperia (talk) 12:41, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Just wanted to thank you for setting up the mailing list. Is it too early for me to be this excited? Cheers! BD2412 (talk) 21:47, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

World SF convention

Hi Ed,

I had a brief email discussion with someone, possibly Oliver K, a while ago in which I mentioned that Worldcon was taking place in London the week after Wikimania. I said that I thought that there might be sufficient overlap in nerdish interest for it to be worth exchanging adverts in the material that each event produces and your name was mentioned. Unfortunately I haven't got round to following this up until now.

BTW will there be any concession prices in the fees or a special daily rate?--Peter cohen (talk) 23:43, 23 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Peter. While I think there will be significant crossover in interested audience, I don't feel there's sufficient thematic coherence to actually cross promote, but feel free to add it to the London guidebook: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikimania_2014_London_Guidebook.
Not sure what your second comment refers to; which fees do you mean? EdSaperia (talk) 07:57, 24 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

OpenStreetMap Birthday Party

Hi there. I saw your comments on this event. Thanks for listing it on the fringe page. Would be great to get some wikimania folks along. I'm signed up as a wikimania volunteer, so planning to be at the volunteer drinks next week. I notice you'll be there. I can chat to you about it then.

-- Harry Wood (talk) 23:28, 27 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid I can't make that event because I'm at a Wikimedia Hackathon in Zurich, but I'll be at LDNOpenDrinks on the 6th? --EdSaperia (talk) 12:25, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Free Culture Weekend signup

Hi

We've running the registration through Eventbrite, please could you sign up through it? The link is listed on the page or just click here. We need to collect metrics for the event and this will allow us to do it in a way that can be done at scale. We're going to provide lunch and refreshments for the event and have staff working on Wikimania so it's important to collect information on the money spent.

Thanks

Submissions accepted for Wikimania?

Hi Ed, any word on when the submissions will be announced accepted or rejected for the Wikimania? They were announced for April 30. Those with accepted papers need to begin proceedings on visas/travel money asap. When can we expect to see the announcements? --WiseWoman (talk) 22:14, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello WiseWoman, first round of acceptances have gone out, second round will go out on the 3rd. Apologies for delay, the team is small and the task is large :) EdSaperia (talk) 15:36, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request

Dear Sir,

I am Salah Mhamdi, a Wikipedian from Tunisia. I got a scholarship to attend Wikimania 2014 in London, UK and I want to apply for visa. Would you please send me a supporting letter to include it with my documents to apply for visa. I emailed Wikimedia Foundation but they did not reply.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards, --Salah Almhamdi (talk) 18:28, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

My session mistakenly marked as withdrawn

Hi Ed, I've noticed that you've mentioned session proposed by me as withdrawn and removed from Friday program. I thought that my session was approved, and I confirmed my intention of participating and being able to present within few hours, in reply to your Email on June 2. If you thought it was withdrawn by me, there had to be some kind of miscommunication. If it was withdrawn by Committe for other reasons, please let me know. Thanks. --Xelgen (talk) 17:03, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Xelgen, I don't seem to have an email from you, can you forward it to me again? EdSaperia (talk) 17:11, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ed, I've forwarded Email to wikimania2014programme@.. address, please confirm reception here, or via Email and let me know If you'd prefer me send it directly to you through "Email user" on this wiki. Thanks. --Xelgen (talk) 17:53, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Got it, and you're back in the programme :)

Registering on Thursday afternoon

My family and I will attend Wikimania. For months we've been preparing the travel, booking planes and hotel, making some arrangements for things to do in London and other places. We have a limited time to stay in London at a proportionally high cost, that we pay ourselves as we find unfair to use resources that can be devoted to people less fortunate (or with better merits) than ourselves. The point is that it was once posted that registering would take place on Barbican Hall, Thursday from 9:00 to 19:00. Then, that mention disappeared. Later, we have been advised to register Thursday afternoon, in an undetermined location. Well, could the Organizers supply a working definition of afternoon (12:00 to 17:00? 14:00 to 19:00?). Location is not so important as we assume that it will take place somewhere in Barbican Centre. We had planned a very early registration. I think that most people would prefer to avoid long queues, but as registration times are not known, there's little we can do to avoid them.

Thanks for your answer.

B25es (talk) 18:47, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hiya - you should be able to register from 10am to 7pm on the Thursday, as registration will be open throughout the pre-conference. EdSaperia (talk) 22:38, 6 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK. Thanks. B25es (talk) 17:13, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

You've got mail

Hi Ed. Just letting you know I've emailed you at ed@wikimanialondon.org. Cheers. Anthonyhcole (talk) 05:43, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure I got this email, what was it about? EdSaperia (talk) 08:51, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I actually sent two - one on 26 June and another yesterday - both to your email address on the contact page ed@wikimanialondon.org:

I have registered and paid for my attendance. With my registration I mentioned I have a back condition that means I may need to lie down from time to time throughout the day. Before I pay for my accommodation and air fares (I'm travelling from Australia) can you confirm that I'll be able to find somewhere to lie down between presentations and meetings?

I went to the Hong Kong Wikimania but there was literally nowhere that I could get a comfortable rest, and I regretted going. I don't need anything plush - just something other than the floor or ground. I need reassurance there will be a couch, bench, sick room or similar somewhere in the venue where I can recover for an hour or two from time to time. It doesn't need to be secluded (though that would be nice). This is a serious disability, and the request is not a frivolous one. I would appreciate your prompt attention. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 03:48, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Do not fear, there will be many comfortable places for lying down, for me this is very important! I'm slightly concerned that I didn't get your email, can you give me a unique phrase that you used in it so I can search for it? EdSaperia (talk) 09:16, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I titled it "Somewhere to lie down?" --Anthonyhcole (talk) 15:56, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, definitely didn't receive it... can you send me another email to test? EdSaperia (talk) 15:59, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Done. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 02:11, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you...

Thank you x1000 for all your work on the upcoming conference. I can't wait to learn, connect with fellow Wikimedians, and explore London for the first time! Much appreciated, --Another Believer (talk) 15:23, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Recent Call

Hi Ed, It's Jack, I called you about five minutes ago, by my phone signal has just disappeared. If you've tried to call me, I won't know about it, so I apologise for that. You're welcome to contact me on here. Jayd2208 (talk) 15:09, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Jack - thanks for messaging - Wikimania2014 doesn't have a problem with unaccompanied minors, but The Barbican Centre might; I'm still trying to give you a definitive answer on this, but I'll let you know as soon as I find out. EdSaperia (talk) 15:12, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Newsflash! It's fine, you can go ahead and register without needing someone to accompany you. See you next week! EdSaperia (talk) 15:13, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Caveat: You can't stay overnight unaccompanied, you have to leave the venue at 11pm. EdSaperia (talk) 15:23, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ed, that is absolutely wonderful to hear! I am absolutely overjoyed at that, and will be signing up today. Thank you so much for helping me out with this. I wouldn't have stayed overnight anyway, so that's fine. If I see you at the conference, I will be sure to thank you in person! Jayd2208 (talk) 15:25, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Spaces for interviews

So sorry this is so last minute, but there are a few consultants coming in for the pre-conference who are doing lots of interviews. I figure they could be in the communal area for these, but it might be easier if there is just a room available for these sorts of things. Any suggestions? If not, we'll figure it out! I know it's GO TIME! Jwild (talk) 14:40, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Should be able to give you a dressing room, how many do you need and when? EdSaperia (talk) 15:33, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Just one; Thursday morning and Friday morning? Jwild (talk) 08:23, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sure, come to the press room and say that I promised you a dressing room for some interviews. EdSaperia (talk) 13:07, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
