Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

A bird's-eye view of a selection of the coolest projects of the Wikimedia Chapters in the past year. Be inspired by creativity and community work from all over the world, in order to transfer the enthusiasm and ideas to your communities back home. A 50 min presentation during which you will learn about more than 30-40 projects run by Wikimedia Chapters, followed by a 30 minutes panel - "How to run a cool project".

Wikimedia Chapters run awesome projects and programmes, all year long. Most of which, you will never hear about. Just like in 2011 and 2012, we will give the Wikimaniacs an overview of the coolest of these projects. The overview includes topics like tips to be successful and things to better avoid, people and movement money involved, target groups or goals. Our goal is to inspire the audience: We hope that they learn from these projects, replicate or improve them and come up with their own ideas.

This session should be a great start of the first day for every Wikimania (and has been for the past four years).

The panel will address the following questions:

  • What is a cool project?
  • Can a local cool project be moved to another local community? Can it become international?
  • How can a local chapter assist in running a cool project?
  • Possible clashes between a local chapter and the group of volunteers running the project?
  • Can a local chapter raise funds for a volunteers project? And should it?
  • How can a local chapter find volunteers for a project? And should it?
  • Can a local project exist without a chapter's support? Or against a chapter's wishes?
  • Can Wikimedia Foundation assist a project? Whether in countries with or without a local chapter?

Panel members:

  • Michal Lester, CEO of Wikimedia Israel
  • Asaf Bartov, Wikimedia Foundation
  • Lodewijk Gelauff
  • Denis Barthel, Wikimedia Deutschland

  1. I endorse this submission and would love to attend. :) I (co-)presented it in the past years, and just wanted to confirm that I'm not planning to submit it myself - which probably triggered Deror's submission. Thanks for taking over! Effeietsanders (talk) 21:16, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
