Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
Supporting the addition of content to Wikimedia Commons (through creation or emancipation) has been a strong focus of Wikimédia France since 2007. Through the years, we developed our programs − improving our GLAM mass-uploads or refining our accreditation strategy. As obsessive Commonists, we tracked and sorted this content ; because we loved numbers, we started experimenting with Toolserver queries to get flaky numbers. In short, we devised means and answers before asking the questions.
The advent of the Program Evaluation era made us re-think this side-strategy, leading us to ask ourselves the Real Questions™ that were creeping under our numbers. We realised that though our tracking strategy was unfocused, it was a fertile ground for evaluating our Wikimedia Commons support ; and that though feeble were our experiments at number cruching, they were the seeds for our much-needed better tools for better answers.
And thus bloomed our wm_metrics project.
wm_metrics is an awesome tool developped to better evaluate Wikimedia France actions, especially related to Wikimedia Commons (which is as you know the most wonderful Wikimedia project). It consists of Python modules, sitting on shoulders of giants − dump exports, the MediaWiki API & ToolLabs-based database queries − and leaveraging on a thorough, template-based Wikimedia Commons content tracking system.
Our contribution will first present the design, the development process and the metrics currently available in wm_metrics, as well as our wild ideas. We want to spark a discussion on program evaluation & the questions we want to ask ourselves as a movement, especially regarding Wikimedia Commons. We hope to get out of this a development roadmap, and possibly some contributors too, for wm_metrics to become a super useful tool for all movement entities, worthy of our movement awesomeness.
This is our product promise, and this is our commitment.
