Collusion

If you are collaborating off wiki re an article rather than on Wiki in the talkpage how do you avoid frezing Wikipedians out of the discussion? Wouldn't it be safer for the students to encourage them to collaborate on the talkpage where their collaboration is transparent and does not exclude the community?
