Overview

There is a whole world of open data and we have our own world, what is in the middle?

Calling technologists, data scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, librarians, and anyone else interested in open data: You're invited to the Wikimania Open Data Weekend.

This isn't your traditional hackathon; no coding skills are necessary! Instead, bring your best ideas about how to work with open data. Whether you're a newbie or an experienced user, if you're interested in open data, you're invited to attend.

The weekend will include:

  • A general discussion on open data and the philosophy and the Semantic Web technologies, illustrating how this can be useful to publish and use data on the web. We will talk about current open knowledge databases such as Freebase, DBPedia and of course Wikidata.
  • Discussion about how open data, specifically Wikidata, is helping the Wikimedia movement as a whole covering its current integration with sister projects such as Wikipedia and Wikisource as well as future integration with these as well as Wikimedia Commons. A big part of this is getting to know the Wikidata project, how to edit, community processes, other ways of getting involved, whats happening on a day to day basis and what is coming soon!
  • The data source is not the only thing helping the movement but also the tools and applications that run and depend on the data stored within. We will take a look at some of the tools that already exist, amazing visualizations and applications.

Of course once you have a general overview of the open data world ideas will come flooding in for tools and applications that could be created and used on a daily basis as well as what might be missing in these Open Databases. No need to create them now, discuss, plan and involve others!

Attendee List

Throughout the weekend, we'll have interactive activities, social time, and a chance to learn about Wikipedia, open data, and how we'll change the world. If you're ready to get involved in Wikipedia and open data, now's your chance to plan the future.

Please register through Eventbrite Register here.

If you would like to come to both days please book a ticket for each.
