Abstract

How can we make Wikipedia better?

Over the past couple years, I have been asking that question at Wikimania and other events, to get a sense of what we think needs the most improvement, as a movement. I invite community and team members to write down one thing they think could make Wikipedia better, and then I take a photo of their idea, along with their mug shot (see thumbnails to the right and this full gallery on my profile page).

Their responses have been diverse and inspiring -- and I would like to share some of the good ideas that have come out of this community outreach.

In this presentation, I will highlight some of the most interesting suggestions, discuss ways they could be implemented, then point out a few that have been successfully addressed by the Wikimedia Foundation and/or community volunteers.

Some of these ideas are easier to do than others, some of them are harder, sometimes controversial. But I believe many of them could make a difference towards improving Wikipedia and the free knowledge movement.

I will also point out which of the ideas keep coming back over and over, suggesting that there is a strong desire among participants to see some serious improvements on these issues.

After the Q&A, I will invite you to write down your own ideas and take your picture, so we can keep adding more of these fine suggestions to our wishlist.

I hope to discuss these ideas with you very soon!
