Working together to build the education track at Wikimania, Future of Education Workshop

Day One: 21 June

You'll hear from professors, Wikimedians, and Wikipedia Education Program leaders worldwide as they share their experiences with using Wikipedia as a teaching tool in classrooms. Have you helped bring Wikipedia to a secondary school or university classroom? Be prepared to share your experiences too! We'll talk about MOOCs, Moodle, Wikipedia Ambassadors, classroom-based activities, media literacy, government policy, and more. We'll have a chance to discuss where Wikipedia's already been integrated into education, and dream about where it can be in one year, five years, and ten years. By the end of day one, we'll have a shared understanding of all the credible work that's going on in different education sectors with regard to Wikipedia, and together, we'll create a shared vision for the future of Wikipedia and education.

Day Two: 22 June

We'll get down to planning how to make the Future of Education track at Wikimania 2014 the best it can be. We'll split up into smaller groups based on interest, experience, and expertise. Educators will partner with educators, librarians will partner with librarians, and so forth. In your small group, you'll create a plan to attract colleagues to come to Wikimania, and you'll develop a series of workshops to teach Wikimania attendees everything they need to know. You know how to speak your peers' language; now, create a plan to reach out within your discipline to help more people like you transform the Wikimedia projects.

What you're signing up for

The Future of Education Workshop is a two-day meeting to create sessions for an education pre-conference at Wikimania 2014, happening simultaneously with the Hackathon. The education pre-conference will bring instructors, librarians, educational technologists, and others up to speed on what's happening with Wikipedia and education -- and how they can participate and be inspired by the Future of Education sessions during Wikimania. We're looking for about 20-25 people to come to the Future of Education Workshop to help us plan the education pre-conference. You'll need to be able to come to the Barbican Centre in London on both 21-22 June for the Future of Education Workshop and 6-7 August for the education pre-conference.

Main outcome

The Wikimania 2014 Education Pre-Conference was the main outcome of this workshop. The Education-related activities presented on 6 and 7 August, ahead of the Wikimania main event, were planned during this Future of Education workshop.
