Project Leaflets

From Wikimania 2014 • London, United Kingdom
(Redirected from Booklets)

Project Leaflets are here to help you recruit volunteers for your project at Wikimania 2014 - and beyond - by making it more discoverable. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations. We hope seeing these will help showcase the breadth of activity within Wikimedia - and hopefully even most community members will find some they've never heard of before!

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

  • Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
  • Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
  • Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
  • Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
  • Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

All you need to do is fill in the template below, we'll do the rest - they'll be ready and waiting for you at Wikimania 2014.

Any questions? Please contact at: ed@wikimanialondon.org
Update: The deadline for leaflet submissions was on 1st July 2014. Adikhajuria (talk) 16:44, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Project name WikiProject Globalization
Short Description Imagine a world in which the forces of globalization were well-known and explanation and documentation of those forces were available to everyone. That is the sweeping vision of WikiProject Globalization. Globalizing processes weave through every aspect of our lives and everyone in the world has something at stake.
Longer description WikiProject Globalization's scope spans the entire globe. That's why we need your help! We currently cultivate 263 articles, covering topics related to economic globalization, global business organization, the global workforce, sociocultural globalization, the global natural environment, and more.

Because globalization reaches into every realm of our lives, new and experienced Wikipedians alike are sure to find project articles or entire topic areas that fit their interests. There are more than a few areas in which we need further expertise: anthropology, business, climate science, earth science, economics, epidemiology, global public health, history, international trade, international finance, international relations, sociology, and world sports.

Experienced translators, copy editors, and grammarians are always welcome. We also regularly have calls for graphics and illustrations for articles. Please visit Portal:Globalization today!

Systemic Bias Kit (copy signed off)

Your contact details keilanawiki@gmail.com
Project name Writing Diversity Back Into Wikipedia
Short Description Wikipedia's systemic bias against women, non-Western people, people of color, non-Anglophone topics, and other marginalized groups is well known. Use this kit to learn how to create a sustainable series of workshops to combat this problem, one editor and one article at a time.
Longer description Representation for these groups is important because Wikipedia is for everyone - not only white, cisgendered, heterosexual males from an Anglophone Western country. With this kit you can learn how to gather a small, effective group of participants and teach them the skills they need to write articles! The model of one-off edit-a-thons or workshops is unsustainable, but with social advertising, repeat workshops (at least once a month) and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, high editor retention rates are completely possible. This kit contains everything you need to run a workshop. Just add Wikipedians!

Wikidata (copy signed off)

Your contact details @nightrose
Project name Wikidata
Short Description Wikidata is an open database for the sum of all knowledge in the world, freely accessible and editable by everyone. Join us now and help the community of Wikipedia authors benefit from this curated and comprehensive repository of structured data!
Longer description

Wikidata's goal is to support the community of Wikipedia authors and everyone else who needs a curated and comprehensive repository of structured data. Editing and curating data is made easy for humans and machines alike. Apart from offering a central repository, Wikidata can also help you in other ways: automatic lists and queries can be created to filter, search and visualize the data in the knowledge base.
The Wikidata project supports all Wikipedia language versions (more than 280) with a single source of structured data. This means all articles in the free online encyclopedia can be complemented with data. To give an example: dates of birth or death of notable people can be integrated in all language versions of Wikipedia once they are stored in Wikidata. Of course, just like all knowledge in Wikipedia and as you'd expect, data in Wikidata can also be used freely everywhere else.

Wikipedia Art and Feminism (copy signed off)

Your contact details User:OR drohowa,User:Theredproject,
Project name Wikipedia Art+Feminism
Short Description In a 2010 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors were female. The practical effect of this disparity is that content is skewed and many articles on notable women in history and art are absent on Wikipedia.
Longer description Wikipedia's gender imbalance is well documented. The ArtAndFeminism project exists to rectify this by creating Wikipedia articles on women and the arts and attracting new women editors to Wikipedia. In February, 2014, More than 30 satellite events were organized in Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States, with a central location at Eyebeam in Manhattan. The campaign attracted an estimated 600 participants, resulting in more than 100 new Wikipedia articles and 100 expanded articles focused on women and the arts, and had substantial local, national, and international press coverage. The project organizers, based in New York, continue to provide event hosting support and resources for any interested party and encourage others to host ArtAndFeminism events.

Project name Wikiwomen's Collaborative
Short Description Wikiwomen's Collaborative is an online initiative that seeks to engage and inspire women to edit Wikipedia, Commons, and related projects through outreach events, calls for action, social media campaigns and peer-to-peer support.
Longer description The WikiWomen's Collaborative is a community project created by women around the world who edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects and want to encourage others to do the same. At last count, the Wikimedia Foundation found that only 9% of Wikipedians are women. Wikiwomen's Collaborative aims to create a social movement to encourage those who are already active Wikimedians to continue to deepen their participation, inspire others to do the same, and make it easy for more women to successfully help share their portion of the sum of all the world's knowledge. Project name Wiki loves Parliaments
Short Description Already successfully implemented in German and Austria, Wiki loves Parliaments is a project in which photographers and Wikipedians gather in government buildings to photograph officials and create Wikipedia pages for them. A second aim of the group is to promote a positive image of the Wikimedia movement in government.
Longer description Since 2009 Wikipedians have been visiting German and Austrian State Parliaments to take photographs of their members. They have been made available under a free license on Wikimedia Commons. They can be used in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects but also outside of Wikipedia - in compliance with the license conditions - for example by the Members of Parliament themselves.

17 such projects have been organised to date with thousands of pictures having been taken. After being discussed in the conference of German State Parliament directors, every parliament invited Wikipedia to visit and we have recently begun to take video statements from officials. We would like to continue with this success and spread our activity to other countries.

Short Description WikiProject Military history is group of English-language Wikipedia editors that work on topics related to military history, theory, and practice. Join us today and help to improve one of the most successful English-language Wikipedia projects.

Short Description Wikipedia needs new high quality editors to join the community - Snuggle helps you find and support the best new editors.
Longer description Snuggle is a browser-based newcomer observation and support system. Snuggle is designed to allow Wikipedian mentors to observe the activities of recently registered editors and identify high quality new editors who are in need of help. This tool was designed in response to recent research that shows that the decline in newcomer retention in Wikipedia is the result of an increasingly negative environment for desirable newcomers and that Wikipedia's current socialization systems don't work because mentors don't find newcomers when they most need help. Wikivoyage (copy signed off)

Your contact details voy:User:LtPowers
Project name Wikivoyage
Short Description For travellers, by travellers: a multilingual, web-based project working to create a free, complete, up-to-date, and reliable worldwide travel guide.
Longer description Wikivoyage was founded in the spirit of sharing knowledge... the same spirit that makes travel so enjoyable. Whenever travellers meet each other on the road, they swap info about the places they came from and ask questions about places they're going.

We want to make it easy to share that knowledge and let others share it; our copyleft license means that the facts you know can spread far and wide. Unlike traditional travel guide books, where everything is copyrighted and based on a single person's one-time visit, Wikivoyage is entirely open content and constantly updated with new information. All you need is Internet access to write and make changes to Wikivoyage articles, even (or especially) while you're travelling!

Wikivoyage's largest language projects are English, German, and French, but we have 13 other languages, too. You can help them grow and become the go-to source for travel information for the world!

Wikispecies (copy signed off)

Your contact details species:User:OhanaUnited
Project name Wikispecies
Short Description Wikispecies is an open, wiki-based species directory and central database of taxonomy. It covers living and fossil representatives of Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Bacteria, Archaea, Protista and all other forms of life.

Wikispecies is free because life is in the public domain!

Longer description Biologists who classify new species normally publish in specialized journals, leading to an overwhelming amount of information being recorded without oversight. Even experts in very specialized fields often don't notice if a species has been formally recorded multiple times.

Therefore, it is not known how many species are known—and this is just as ridiculous as it sounds. Nobody knows because there is no central registration process and no database or reference directory to browse information about the current state of knowledge on a particular species. This situation can be summarized with the statement: A central, extensive database for taxonomy is urgently needed.

Wikispecies exists to solve this problem by creating a browsable, taxonomically classified library of links to publications for all living and fossil species on Earth. We are different from other similar projects in that we can be edited by anyone, allowing errors to be quickly fixed.

Short Description This project aims to create, verify, and maintain coverage related to astronomical objects on Wikipedia.
Longer description The main purpose of this project is to make sure that Wikipedia's coverage of astronomical objects is accurate, verifiable, thorough, complete, and concise.

Throughout Wikipedia's history, coverage of astronomical objects has been light with many important objects such as 10 Lacertae having only stubs for articles and a few very important objects, such as 59 Serpentis, having no articles at all. Often undue weight is given to unestablished or unconfirmed discoveries.

The purpose of this project is to make sure that articles on any sort of astronomical object follow the basic Wikipedia guidelines as well as in-project guidelines such as the notability policy and the naming conventions and to make sure that articles are as complete and accurate as possible. We can use all the help we can get; there's lots of work to be done!

WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration (copy signed off)

Project name WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration
Short Description In a subject plagued by conflicting historical narratives, we have the opportunity to make wikipedia the conflict's most balanced reference point. Help us build bridges and break down barriers in the world's most intractable conflict.
Longer description Known as the "world's most intractable conflict", much of the fighting has been over historical narratives. The two side's histories hardly intertwine and respected scholars and journalists often disagree, presenting great challenges to wikipedia editors.

As the world's primary open source publication on the topic, our encyclopaedia has the opportunity to become the subject's most balanced reference point, with a truly bilateral narrative.

We would encourage anyone with an interest in the Middle East and a passion for neutrality to help. We can't guarantee that noone will bite; long memories, deeply ingrained passions and a Mediterranean climate mean things can get hotheaded.

But we promise that a persistent focus on clarity, neutrality and verifiability will leave contributors with the satisfaction of helping remove barriers between two peoples fact by fact, one at a time, perhaps equivalent to a "truth and reconciliation commission". Help us build a single encyclopaedic narrative, and mutual understanding and trust.

Project name Wikimedia Language Engineering
Short Description The Wikimedia Language Engineering team, an integral part of Wikimedia Foundation's Engineering department, is working to ensure that all people across the world have good access to Wikipedia regardless of their language and platform. The team’s mission is to build language features and tools to support wiki communities across the world.
Longer description Wikimedia websites are available in more than 300 languages (287 Wikipedias). The best multilingual user experience should allow users to read and edit wiki pages in all these languages without discrimination. To make this a reality, Wikimedia’s Language Engineering team is on a mission to support all languages in the Wikimedia universe with tools and extensions to overcome constraints caused by devices, operating systems or web-browsers - particularly complex scripts that are in nascent stages of internationalization or are limited due to inconsistent support across platforms.

Using the UniversalLanguageSelector feature, input methods and web fonts are provided on Wikimedia websites to read and edit wiki pages without requiring any additional capabilities on the user’s device. Coming up soon is also a Wikipedia content translation tool that can be used to create new articles from existing articles in other languages. Short Description Already successfully implemented in few French speaking countries, WikiProject Sports Photo is a project in which photographers take high quality sport photos.

WikiProject Articles for Creation (copy signed off)

Your contact details en:Wikipedia_Talk:WikiProject_Articles_for_creation
Project name Wikiproject Articles for Creation (AfC)
Short Description Hundreds of draft potential articles are written by new editors every day. The variability of submissions in scope, suitability and quality is immense. Wikiproject AfC's editors work through these submissions to make sure those that are made into articles are positive contributions to Wikipedia.
Longer description Wikiproject AfC was established as a way of helping new editors and the project as a whole. 'Draft:' space is an environment for editors to submit potential new articles, safe from many of the deletion reasons which apply in mainspace. With Wikiproject AfC, drafts are reviewed by experienced editors for notability and other policy compliance before promotion to a full article. If drafts are not ready, reviewers offer advice and support on how they can be improved.

Due to the success of Wikipedia, the rate of article submissions is increasing. In order to offer every submitter a timely and useful review we urgently need new volunteers. Reviewers should be familiar with general policy regarding article inclusion and be keen to support new and inexperienced Wikipedians.

Please introduce yourself at the Wikiproject's talk page. A supportive and vibrant community looks forward to welcoming you to Wikiproject Articles for Creation!

WikiProject Editor Retention (copy signed off)

Your contact details Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention
Project name WikiProject Editor Retention
Short Description WikiProject Editor Retention exists to help keep good editors at Wikipedia. We address existing difficulties, the ever-changing needs of the general community, and provide a positive environment to discuss new ideas. We don't define policies but discuss them, hoping to find solutions that are specifically geared toward retaining editors.
Longer description The primary focus of WikiProject Editor Retention is to find out why editors contribute regularly, why they stop contributing, and if they do, what can we do to prevent others from leaving as well. We realise that Wikipedia will not work without editors, and we need to find means of allowing them to write the encyclopaedia without feeling their work is unvalued and causing them to consider leaving. The project tries to focus on positive feedback, saying what is RIGHT about Wikipedia, and encourages others to use those methods and establish new methods and ideas that make editing Wikipedia fun, fulfilling and rewarding for everyone. The project hosts the Editor of the Week program, designed to acknowledge one exceptional editor per week who might otherwise be overlooked.

Short Description Wiki Loves Earth is an international photo competition which aims to collect photographs of natural heritage sites under free license in order to use them for illustrating articles on Wikipedia and other Wiki Projects. It also contributes to the development of the sustainable living philosophy and the protection of the Earth's natural heritage.
Longer description The international photo contest Wiki Loves Earth was first held in 2013 in Ukraine and engaged 16 countries in 2014. The Wikimedia chapter of each participating country uses lists of natural monuments handled by their state or develops its own with help of local researchers and ecologists to structure the competition according to Wikipedia needs. In some countries the photo contest is accompanied with a thematic month of writing articles on natural monuments. As a special nomination some countries also collect sounds of nature and other media files in addition to the photos. The contest provides a great opportunity to create new partnerships and develop outreach in the sphere of nature protection, as its partners range from international organizations such as WWF and UNDP to local nature protection organizations. Short Description We aim to link together the Ibero-American Wikimedia chapters and working groups through fostering collaboration and experience sharing.
Longer description Ibero-America is a region in which the organization of the Wikimedia movement is still a big challenge. We believe that our approach as an initiative considering not only established chapters but also the existing informal working groups will enable us to overcome this.

Iberocoop (Regional Cooperation Initiative for Ibero-America) is by no means a meta-chapter or any sort of binding structure. It is a cooperation framework aimed at making the most of the common linguistic and cultural features of our region.

Iberocoop's working languages are Spanish and Portuguese — not English — as we want to enable interaction and cooperation in our own languages in an effort to participate on an equal footing. Chapters or working groups outside Ibero-America are more than invited to subscribe if interested!

Project name en.Wikipedia:WikiProject Libertarianism
Short Description WikiProject Libertarianism seeks to improve Wikipedia's articles on the different libertarian philosophies and alternatives, as well as libertarian political action, parties and candidates worldwide. It also seeks to improve political and economic articles and provide analysis of how government policies negatively affect society.
Longer description Individuals and groups worldwide seek greater liberty from control and violence by governments foreign and domestic.

All Wikimedia projects in every language need strong subprojects on Libertarianism to ensure that the philosophy, analysis and alternatives are accurately and completely detailed.
