Talk:Submissions/Digitization of Vachana Sahitya & Kannada WikiSource

From Wikimania 2014 • London, United Kingdom

It sounds like a presentation on the progress of a sub-project of Wiki Project India. How does this advance the overall wiki community? Will the presenter show a better way to scan the book and make it machine readable? Geraldshields11 (talk) 22:21, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Geraldshields11 yes, its a sub-project for Kannada Wikipedia (Wiki Project India). There have been no such initiatives taken up for the Kannada wiki community so far. This project aims at one of the very important aspect of 11th and 12th Century literature digitization task with the help of Researchers (Again involvement of researchers or resource people from outside Wikipedia Community and making them work with the common goal is first of its kind for Kannada Wikipedia project). Along with this, Kannada wiki source is going to get the digitized and reviewed version of literary work which includes 21000 verses of the vachana's while it adds profiles and research related content to Kannada Wikipedia for over 259 Vachanakaara's (Authors of these verses from 11th & 12th Century). This covers one of the major literary works to be available in public domain. Regarding your query on the presentation, it wouldn't have any demo on machine readable format as OCR technology is not yet working satisfactorily for Kannada language. I will be explaining how we came up with this project, what made us take up digitization work, tasks involved, how the efforts are going to be pulled to make this data available in Wiki Source etc. Please let me know if you have any other queries. I would be very much interested to learn if there is any better machine readable technology to make the digitization process easier for other Kannada Literature.
